WORLD SCIENCE DAY FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT: World Science Day for Peace and Development is observed annually on November 10, highlighting the role of science in society. Proclaimed by UNESCO in 2001 through Resolution 31 C/20, this day aims to encourage global engagement with scientific knowledge and its relevance to everyday life. It seeks to raise awareness about the importance of science in maintaining and improving the fabric of society.
World Science Day for Peace and Development also acknowledges the vital contributions of scientists towards the sustainable development of our planet.
WORLD SCIENCE DAY FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT 2024: THEME
This year’s theme for World Science Day for Peace and Development is, ‘Why Science Matters – Engaging Minds and Empowering Future.’ This theme has been selected to highlight the significant role of science in society and in our daily lives.

WORLD SCIENCE DAY FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT 2024: HISTORY
UNESCO and the International Council for Science organised the first-ever World Scientific Conference in Budapest in 1999. At the event, several delegations emphasised the need for educating society about science. A unanimous decision was made to dedicate a special day or week to science. A year later, the UNESCO Executive Body adopted November 10 as World Science Day for Peace and Development.
Proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2001, this day has since inspired numerous global science projects and programmes. It also aims to promote collaboration among scientists in regions affected by conflict, as shown by the establishment of the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organisation (IPSO), which received support from UNESCO.
On November 10, 2002, the first World Science Day for Peace and Development was observed globally. It brought together various partners, including UNESCO National Commissions, governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organisations, professional associations, scientific and research institutions, science teachers, schools, and even the media.

The observance of World Science Day for Peace and Development has had a significant impact globally since its establishment. The day is celebrated to raise awareness, highlight the role of science in building a sustainable society, promote methods deeply rooted in science and their application to achieve peace, face challenges with commitment and focus, and make scientific literacy accessible to all.
It is a day when people from all walks of life can come together to learn about the latest discoveries in the field and understand the benefits of science and its key role in enhancing their lives. This day has led to the launch of important projects, programmes, and grants for research worldwide.
