NEW DELHI: After England‘s four-wicket loss to West Indies in the first ODI, captain Jos Buttler candidly admitted that it has been a challenging period for him as a batter, emphasising the need to work hard and trust in his form eventually returning.
Despite England posting a formidable total of 325, West Indies, led by Shai Hope‘s heroic century, secured a historic victory at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
“You always want to play well, and it’s been a little while since I have played well. I just need to work hard and trust that it will come back,” Buttler stated in the post-match interview, acknowledging his recent batting struggles.
In the last 10 ODIs, Buttler has faced a lean patch, managing only 141 runs at an average of 14.10. His form during the recently concluded Cricket World Cup was also below par, contributing to England’s disappointing campaign.
Despite the loss, Buttler praised West Indies skipper Shai Hope and his team for their exceptional batting effort. He also commended his own team’s batting performance, particularly appreciating the intent shown by the players.
“Fantastic game of cricket. A lot of credit goes to Shai Hope. We asked a lot of questions of them, but they played really well towards the end. Thought it was a fantastic batting effort (from England), really loved the intent that the guys came out with,” said Buttler in reflection of the match.
The England skipper expressed optimism and a willingness to learn from the experience, stating, “A brilliant game of cricket, credit to Shai Hope and Shepherd, it was fantastic hitting, and we will learn a lot from that. We did some things well, a lot to take out of it, we’re looking forward to the next.”
