Led by blistering knocks from the top order and some disciplined bowling, India registered a massive 100-run win to level the series at 1-1. “Very happy, great to be back on the winning note back again. With the way Abhishek (Sharma) and Rutu (Ruturaj Gaikwad) batted, it was not easy, especially in the powerplay, with the ball moving around. But Abhi and Rutu built the innings brilliantly,” said Gill.
Batting first, India put up daunting 234 for 2 on the board, thanks to Abhishek’s smashing ton (100 of 47 balls), which included seven fours and eight sixes. Gaikwad, who batted at number three, scored 77 not out off 47 balls with 11 fours and a six. The finishing touch to the innings was provided by Rinku Singh’s big hits that produced 5 sixes and 2 fours in his 22-ball 48 not out.
Gill heaped praise on Abhishek and Gaikwad, who added 137 runs for the second wicket, while admitting that his young side couldn’t absorb pressure in the opening match of the tour.
“Yesterday (1st T20I on Saturday), it was more about not being able to handle the pressure. It’s a young side and many of them are new to international exposure. It was actually good to have pressure in the first game and we knew what to expect coming into this game (2nd T20I on Sunday),” said Gill.
“We have got three matches to go and we are looking forward to them. It’s always good to have more options rather than not having options.”
Zimbabwe’s challenging chase folded up at 134 in 18.4 overs, with Wessly Madhevere top-scoring for his team with his 43 off 39 balls.
For India, right-arm seamers Avesh Khan (3 for 15) and Mukesh Kumar (3 for 37) led the bowling charts with three wickets each, while leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi (2 for 11) picked two.
