Sudha Murty was honoured with the Padma Shri Award for social work in 2006.

Sudha Murty has been wearing sarees gifted to her by her sisters, close friends and occasionally, the NGOs she works with.

Sudha Murty, Chairperson of Infosys Foundation, a renowned author with 150+ books, an educator, philanthropist, and social worker, is married to Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy. Inspiring many, she defied gender norms by pursuing engineering, once male-dominated. Her simplicity shines through as she hasn’t bought a new saree in three decades. It is quite astonishing to know that Sudha has not purchased any new saree despite having a net worth of Rs 700 crore.

Sudha told the reason behind this in an interview. She said, “I was in Kashi to take the holy dip, and when you go to Kashi you have to give up something that you enjoy the most. I gave up shopping, particularly sarees, from then. I now only buy the essential items.”

Sudha said that her husband Narayana Murthy also has a similar nature. They spend a significant amount of money on books and have a collection of around 20,000 books.

According to thevoiceoffashion.com, Sudha has been wearing sarees that are gifted to her by her sisters, close friends, and, occasionally, the NGOs that she works with. A group of battered women have given her two hand-embroidered sarees and these are her most cherished possessions.

Sudha was honoured with the Padma Shri Award for social work in 2006 and awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2023. She was born into a Kannada-speaking Deshastha Madhva Brahmin family. She is the daughter of R. H. Kulkarni, a surgeon, and his wife Vimala Kulkarni, a school teacher. Sudha has two children – Akshata and Rohan Murthy. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has tied the knot with Akshata Murthy. In an interview with a portal, Sudha said that she had made her husband Narayana Murthy a businessman. Sudha further said that her daughter Akshata made her husband Prime Minister of the UK. According to Sudha, a wife can change a husband. Sudha also said that her daughter influenced Rishi Sunak’s life in many ways, particularly his diet.
